    About 300 million years ago, Earth had dense swampy forests in low-lying wetland areas.

    2. Refining Crude Oil: The Science of Fractional Distillation

    When petroleum is pumped out from deep underground wells, it is not ready to be put straight into a car or an airplane. It comes out as a dark, oily, foul-smelling liquid called Crude Oil.

    Crude oil is actually a complex mixture of many different substances like petrol, diesel, kerosene, paraffin wax, and lubricating oil. To separate these useful components (called fractions), we perform a process called Refining.

    The Logic Behind Separation:

  • Every substance in crude oil boils and turns into vapor at a different temperature (its boiling point).
  • Crude oil is heated to a very high temperature at the base of the tall column. Most of it boils and turns into vapor.
  • The vapors rise up the column, which gets progressively cooler toward the top.
  • Heavy fractions with *high boiling points* condense quickly near the bottom and are collected.
  • Lighter fractions with *lower boiling points* rise higher up before they cool down, condense, and are collected at higher levels.
  • The gases that do not condense at room temperature escape from the very top!

  • Easy Transportation: It can be easily transported through underground pipelines directly into homes and factories (for example, in Vadodara, Gujarat, and parts of Delhi).
  • Compressed Natural Gas (CNG): When stored under high pressure, natural gas becomes CNG.
  • Clean Fuel: CNG produces very little smoke, leaves no ash behind, and burns completely. This makes it a non-polluting, eco-friendly fuel ideal for automobiles in crowded cities.
